Terri Butler MP has expressed her sympathy for the workers at Forgacs Cairnscross following today’s decision to close its Colmslie dockyard.
“It is disappointing that the workers at this facility will be without work in just four weeks.
“My heart goes out to these workers and their families.
“Workers I spoke to at the dockyard just two weeks ago were very concerned about the significant downturn in the shipbuilding and maintenance industry.
“Some of these workers are second and third generation ship workers and face moving interstate to find work.
“It is very disappointing that along with the jobs we are seeing the loss of skills in a highly specialised industry.
“The shipbuilding industry is of strategic importance to Australia,
“And I urge the Abbott government to support the industry to ensure we maintain jobs and skills into the future.” Ms Butler said.
