Terri Butler MP intends to second a Bill for marriage equality.
“During the last sitting of Parliament I signed a document stating my intention to second a Bill for marriage equality,” she said.
“The bill is a cross-party Bill.
“Bill Shorten and Tanya Plibersek have shown great leadership on this issue. Now it’s time for Tony Abbott to step up and allow his MPs and Senators a free vote.
“As Bill Shorten has said, he wants to see marriage equality in Australia. And as he’s said, it’s the outcome that matters, not whose name is on the Bill.
“Like Bill and Tanya, and so many of our parliamentary colleagues of all political persuasions, I want to see marriage equality made a reality as quickly as possible.
“Warren Entsch is a recognised leader in relation to LGBTI issues, in the Parliament.
“He, Laurie Ferguson, and everyone who has worked on this Bill have done so with goodwill and with a view to making sure that marriage equality becomes a reality.
“I pay tribute to all who have supported marriage equality in our Parliament to date, and the even greater number who will support it in the future given the opportunity to do so,” she said.
