MR ABBOTT HAS HIS PRIORITIES WRONG ON PAID PARENTAL LEAVE.

Member for Griffith Terri Butler says Mr Abbott has his priorities wrong with his expensive and inequitable paid parental leave scheme.

“There’s much to be done to make quality childcare, that meets parents’ and children's needs, affordable and accessible,” Ms Butler said in a speech to the Parliament on Wednesday night.

“When there is so much to be done, the Prime Minister’s paid parental leave scheme seems unfair and indulgent.

“The 2009 Productivity Commission report into paid parental leave expressly disapproved of a scheme like Mr Abbott’s, instead recommending the option that Labor implemented – parental leave at the minimum wage.

“The Government has not heeded the Productivity Commission’s report.

“And now public policy experts, economists, business people and Coalition MP’s have openly criticised the scheme.

“In the face of all this criticism one would think that the Prime Minister would reconsider this scheme.

“If it is possible to raise sufficient monies for a $5.5b scheme, then why not use those monies on the other ‘legs’ of work and family policy – like making paid work more compatible with family demands, and making quality childcare, that meets parents’ and families’ needs, more accessible and more affordable,” Ms Butler said.
