Member for Griffith Terri Butler tabled a petition calling for existing hate speech laws to be kept, signed by almost 1000 Brisbane locals, in Parliament today.

“The Holland Park Islamic Society collected a petition about the hate speech laws, and asked me to table it on behalf of the petitioners,” Ms Butler said.

“I was pleased to do so because I strongly believe that the hate speech laws should remain.

“The Abbott government’s proposed changes are wrong. They take away protections from racial vilification.

“This week in parliament I attended meetings with representatives of a large number of ethnic communities – including the Hellenic, Jewish, and Chinese communities among others – all of whom were united in their opposition to the Abbott government’s proposed changes to hate speech laws.

“I hope the Attorney-General will listen to the voice of people across this nation and stop this attempt to remove hate speech protections,” Ms Butler said.
