Turnbull government MP claims housing affordability not a federal issue.

Member for Forde Bert van Manen today claimed housing affordability is not a federal issue.

In response to a question from the ABC’s Steve Austin about housing affordability, Mr van Manen said:

“Well firstly, Steve, I don’t believe housing affordability is a federal issue. Housing, planning, development approval is all done at a state and a local government level.”

“This kind of buck passing and denial epitomises the Coalition’s lack of action on housing affordability,” Terri Butler said.

“The best words to describe the Turnbull Government’s housing affordability policy have been ‘paralysis’ and ‘division’,” she said.

“Labor has been calling on the Turnbull government to address the issue of housing affordability.

“We’ve seen the Assistant Minister to the Treasurer telling people that the answer to housing affordability issues is to get highly paid jobs, and now a Coalition MP is saying it’s just someone else’s problem.

“It is appalling that instead of seriously looking at this policy issue the government has suggested that getting a highly paid job is the answer, or trying to pass the buck,” she said.
