In the mid-year economic and fiscal outlook the government announced $2.2 billion worth of cuts to higher education.
They’ve cut the equivalent of 9,500 uni places in 2018. It’s the same story in 2019. That’s a lot of people who’ll be excluded from going to university.
These cuts don’t make sense. We need our universities to be a strong part of the innovation eco-system. They are also an important part of our international economic relations because education and international tourism, which go hand in hand, are our largest services exports. Cutting uni funding at the same time as other countries in our region are investing more in higher education will make it harder for our home-grown institutions to compete for international students. Most importantly, cutting university funding is robbing our kids and future students of the quality education they’ll need for the jobs of the future.
These cuts come as the government’s trying to cut corporate taxes by $65 billion over a decade. The Turnbull government’s priorities are twisted.
