Minister for Women, Senator Michaelia Cash, today voted for a Cory Bernardi motion designed to criticize White Ribbon for its pro-choice stance.
White Ribbon is an organisation dedicated to reducing and eliminating violence against women. Reproductive coercion is an insidious form of domestic violence. There is no reason at all why White Ribbon should not be entitled to be, and to state that it is, pro-choice.
Instead of voting to attack White Ribbon and women’s reproductive rights, maybe the Liberals could do something to tackle reproductive coercion. It’s a serious problem for women in violent relationships.
White Ribbon Day is only a few weeks away. As Minister for Women, Senator Cash should be supporting moves to reduce and eliminate violence against women, not joining forces with Cory Bernardi in this stunt.
The motion stated:
That the Senate notes that—
(a)a number of senators are White Ribbon Ambassadors, or have tabled motions supporting campaigns to stop violence against women and domestic violence; and
(b)a statement on the White Ribbon Australia website states they advocate for “nationally consistent access to safe and legal abortion, including late-term abortion in all states and territories”, and if senators have a concern about that stance, they ought to take it up with White Ribbon Australia.
